  • UMass is 6-4 on the season. The Minutemen snapped a 3-game losing streak by defeating New Orleans in overtime last time out. Game Preview

Providence travels to Amherst for a Monday night tilt against the Minutemen of UMass. Derrick Kellogg’s crew is 6-4 through their first 10 games of the season and are coming off an overtime win against New Orleans where they scored 103 points and senior guard Trey Davis set a new Mullins Center record with 40 points, breaking the previous record held by Marcus Camby (38 points). The Friars will look to close out their non-conference schedule on a positive note, but Cooley’s club may be without Kris Dunn again. Dunn is still fighting illness and has missed the last 2.5 games because of it. Dunn has been on the team’s bench the last 2 games in sweats and did practice a bit last week. He is a game-time decision for Cooley.

The probable starters according to the game notes and prior box scores are:

Providence
  • Kyron Cartwright – #24 – Sophomore
  • Junior Lomomba – #32 – Junior
  • Jalen Lindsey – #21 – Sophomore
  • Rodney Bullock – #5 – Sophomore
  • Ben Bentil – #0 – Sophomore
UMass
  • Jabarie Hinds – #5 – Senior
  • Trey Davis – #12 – Senior
  • Donte Clark – #0 – Sophomore
  • Zach Coleman – #13 – Sophomore
  • Rashaan Holloway – #45 -Freshman

Providence’s biggest advantage in this game will be on the glass. The Minutemen are missing Cady Lalanne on the inside after the big man graduated in May. Derrick Kellogg is starting freshman Rashaan Holloway at the center position and senior Tyler Bergantino comes off the bench for 14.4 minutes/game to provide energy and the occasional chippy play. The Friars should be able to crash the offensive glass and get second chance opportunities. If Providence does that and manages to control UMass’ guard, especially Trey Davis, they have a chance to win this road game, even without Dunn.

Prediction*: Providence 69 UMass 73

*This predicted score is assuming Dunn doesn’t play.
