Providence Recruiting Update: Isaiah Whaley Likes School Spirit, Program Pride at PC

Isaiah Whaley doesn’t remember exactly when Jeff Battle began recruiting him “but he has been recruiting me for awhile,” Whaley told pcbb1917.com this week. Whaley is a 6’9 power forward who hails from Battle’s former home state of North Carolina. Whaley transferred to Evelyn Mack Academy about a month ago following an arrest for petty larceny. The details of that minor run-in with the law can be found here for those interested. Providence is clearly interested in the lanky Whaley and they have a big need in their frontcourt.

Whaley was in Friartown on an unofficial visit with other members of the Evelyn Mack Academy team for Providence’s Late Night Madness festivities on October 17th and even though he didn’t get much of a chance to hang out with the team that night he is “pretty sure I will in the future.” He hasn’t taken any visits yet “but I plan to soon.” Whaley also told pcbb1917.com that he was impressed by the “school spirit and pride in the program” that he witnessed at Late Night Madness. When asked to describe his game Whaley explained “my game is based on my speed, skill, passing ability and IQ on the court. People say I play like Anthony Davis and Hassan Whiteside.” In terms of what he is looking for in a school he wants to be “comfortable in the program and in the system.”

Providence is searching far and wide for a big man — or maybe two — in the class of 2016 and a source told pcbb1917.com that Providence is in Whaley’s top 3. The Friars are also heavily pursuing 22ft Academy’s Darius Hicks — Whaley and Hicks actually went head-to-head last week in a game — as well Hargrave Military Academy’s Iran Bennett and a few others.
