Providence Offers 2016 Point Guard Jalen Harris, Will Visit PC Officially in October

The search for a point guard is heating up for Ed Cooley and his staff and they have a lot of irons in the fire. They extended another offer to a 2016 lead guard on Monday with Word of God Christian Academy’s Jalen Harris being the recipient. Harris was visited at his home on Sunday by Providence coaches, according to Jamie Shaw of PhenomHoopReport.com. Shaw was the first to report the offer being made and he also tweeted that Harris plans to visit Providence officially on October 9th.

Harris is another recruit that Jeff Battle got the Friars involved with from the state of North Carolina. He is entering his second season at Word of God this year after spending the first two years of high school at the Greenfield School. He ran with Team Wall on the adidas Gauntlet circuit. He averaged an impressive 13.7 points/game and 4.7 assists/game during adidas Gauntlet play in April and July. Rick Lewis of PhenomHoopReport.com told me:

“Jalen is a super quick PG and has excellent court vision. He has tremendous bounce off the dribble. He is a passer friendly PG with excellent court vision. He has HM ability. The next step in his development is to cut down on unforced turnovers.”

Harris also has offers from Abilene Christian, Buffalo, Charlotte, DePaul, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Wright State. He also has interest from Arkansas, Clemson, East Carolina, Kansas, NC State, Tulsa and Virginia Tech. Wake Forest had expressed interest while Jeff Battle was still associate head coach for the Demon Deacons. Harris has grown quite a bit in the last 2 years, adding a couple of inches and about 25 pounds to his frame.

Harris’ visit will come about a week after another 2016 point guard visits in Maliek White and the Friars hosted NYC guard Shamorie Ponds this past weekend. Providence also had offers out to Tony Carr, Quentin Jackson and a few other point guards who are now off the board and committed elsewhere. Sources have indicated that might be happening with both White and Ponds and Cooley doesn’t appear to want to wait around to find out. Cooley and assistant coach Jeff Battle will also visit 2016 point guard Davion Mintz at his high school this week.
