Friends of Friars Basketball to Host 3rd Annual Charity Golf Outing

There is an organization that is made up largely of former Providence basketball players — Friends of Friars Basketball — that aims to raise money to benefit the Providence College basketball program. Their main concern though seems to be to continue to foster a togetherness and camaraderie among former players, coaches and supporters of the Providence basketball family. I attended their golf outing last year and it was a lot of fun. This year’s outing will take place on August 8th and the field is almost full. I spoke with President Chris Carter of FOFB about the upcoming event and their organization.

“The Friends of Friars Basketball Charity Golf Tournament is in its 3rd year now and weĀ are hopingĀ that itĀ will be our biggest yet in terms of both former player attendance and overall money raised,” Carter said.Ā The first two outings raised more than $25,000 combined and they manage to raise the money while charging a very reasonable $125.

“The Golf Tournament is one of the primary ways in which our organization raises money to both give back to the community and the Providence College Basketball program. Through our previous tournaments, weĀ have beenĀ able to raiseĀ thousands, most of which has already been donated directly back toĀ the PC Basketball program,” Carter noted.

He continued, “that being said,Ā we are still looking forward to being able to expand our scope of charitable work and the more we are able to raise, the greater the impact we can have.Ā The tournament is also a great opportunity for the former players to come backĀ to reconnect with each otherĀ as well as Friar fans. Some of the stories that get told and reminisced about from back when these guys played are truly second to none. It is our goal to have players from every generation attend and the player list continues to grow with names like Ernie D. and Kevin Stacom already on the roster for our event.”

While they are almost full for the golf outing there are still some spots open. “It’s a great opportunity for fans to get to come and be around all the players that they’ve grown up watching and maybe even play a round with some, Carter concluded.
