Game Notes

  • This will mark the 97th meeting all-time between Providence and Seton Hall. The series is currently led by Providence, 50-46. The series led by Seton Hall, 26-20, when played at Seton Hall. Providence went 2-1 against Seton Hall last season and are 1-0 against the Pirates this season. The Friars beat Seton Hall by 7 points on February 14th.
  • Seton Hall welcomes Providence to the Prudential Center following a one-point win at home against Creighton, 67-66, on Saturday. The Pirates are led in scoring by junior Sterling Gibbs, who averages 16.7 points/game and is returning from a two-game suspension to play the Friars. Seton Hall is led in rebounding by freshman Angel Delgado, who averages 9.9 rebounds/game. That mark is good enough to lead the Big East.
  • Providence is coming off a home win over Marquette on Sunday, 77-66. Carson Desrosiers missed his second straight game and will be a game-time decision for Ed Cooley on Wednesday night. The Friars were led in scoring by LaDontae Henton. Henton scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds leading Cooley to call him “a man possessed” in his postgame remarks.
  • LaDontae Henton jumped all the way up to 4th place on the all-time points scored list at Providence with 1,983 career points. His 25 points against Marquette allowed him to leap over Jamel Thomas and Bryce Cotton on the all-time list. Henton trails Eric Murdock by 38 points for 3rd all-time and Henton is 17 points away from 2,000 career points. Henton grabbed his 1,000th rebound early in Sunday’s game and he’s now 16 boards behind Ryan Gomes for 6th all-time. If he were to accomplish both the scoring and rebounding feats Henton would join Ryan Gomes in the 2,000 point, 1,000 rebound club in Providence College history. Carson Desrosiers is 8th on the all-time blocked shots list at Providence College with 153 blocks through 61 career games as a Friar. Desrosiers is 2 blocks behind Randall Hanke for 7th place in school history. Kris Dunn‘s 209 assists this season rank him 8th on the all-time assists in a season list. Next on the list is Ernie DiGregorio, who had 214 assists in the 1971-72 season.
  • The line opened with Providence as a 1 point favorite.

Game Preview

Providence controls their own destiny for 2nd place in the Big East behind Villanova. In order to finish in 2nd place and get the coveted 2 seed for the Big East Tournament the Friars have to beat Seton Hall and Butler to finish the regular season. The first step is Wednesday night at the Prudential Center against the Pirates.

Sterling Gibbs is back from a 2-game suspension and that means the Pirates get their leading scorer back into the lineup. Whether or not he and freshman Isaiah Whitehead can co-exist could determine any success Seton Hall has in the next 10 days. Freshman Angel Delgado leads the Big East in rebounding at 9.9 per game and is the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year in the league. He had 15 rebounds the last time these teams met and he could be an x-factor down low, especially if Carson Desrosiers is unable to go again due to his knee injury suffered in the DePaul game on February 18th.

LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn will need to carry the scoring load and it would be helpful if Tyler Harris continues his play from the Villanova game and first half of the Marquette game to supplement scoring. Ben Bentil will need to avoid foul trouble and Paschal Chukwu’s minutes will have to be used strategically as he doesn’t matchup particularly well with the quickness of Delgado.

I think the Friars are on a mission and Henton understands the end is near so Providence will win this game but don’t be surprised if you are having hear palpitations in the final minutes.

Prediction: Providence 68 Seton Hall 65
