Dunn’s Triple Double Leads Providence Past DePaul, 83-72

Providence and DePaul had to wait a couple extra days to play this game but Kris Dunn didn’t seem to mind. The redshirt sophomore had a career game that spurred Providence to an 11 point home win over the DePaul Blue Demons. “I thought Kris dictated the entire game today,” said Ed Cooley after the game. “He totally, totally dominated the game, defensively, offensively, rebounding.”

The first half was the key to the victory according to Cooley. “I thought the first 20 minutes really was, to me, the game. I thought we played with purpose. I thought we had energy.”

That first 20 minutes saw Dunn do a little bit of everything to carry the Friars as LaDontae Henton was plagued with foul trouble. Dunn finished the first half with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. The Friars led by as much as 21 points during the first half and took a 41-23 lead into the break. DePaul shot just 32%, including 3/10 from 3-point range, from the field in the first half and Providence played a stingy mix of zone and man-to-man that didn’t allow DePaul’s dangerous shooters to get many open looks.

The second half was a different story for the DePaul offense as the Blue Demons shot 64.3% from the field, including 4/8 from downtown. Unfortuntaly for DePaul it was the same story for Dunn, who would score 17 second half points, pull down 4 rebounds and dish out 4 assists to finish the game with career highs in points and rebounds while recording his first career triple double. That triple double was the first one ever by a Providence Friar in Big East play and the last overall since Geoff McDermott accomplished the feat December 22, 2006 against Harvard.

Dunn’s final stat line was 27 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 3 steals in 37 minutes of action. DePaul was led by Tommy Hamilton with 22 points. Providence had 4 other players score in double figures and got good contributions from freshmen like Kyron Cartwright and Ben Bentil. Cartwright had a career high 11 points and Bentil finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Henton finished with 12 points and is now just 2 points behind Friar legend Joe Hassett for 7th on the all-time points scored in a career list at Providence College.

Providence now sits atop the Big East standings in sole possession of first place at 6-2 in league play. The Friars return to action Saturday at 12pm against the St. John’s Red Storm at Madison Square Garden.
