National Polls Update: Week 10

Providence went 2-0 this week, including an impressive comeback win at Butler with their all-grit team playing most of the second half. The Friars also got an overtime win at home against Georgetown who was 27th in the USA Today Coaches Poll last week. The Friars went 4 straight weeks without receiving any votes in either poll but following their 3-1 start to the Big East they are now getting some love from a few writers. That 3-1 Big East record is good for a tie for 1st place with Villanova, Seton Hall and DePaul. Providence got 16 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll which ranks them 33rd this week and 17 votes in the AP Poll which ranks them 29th this week.

The Big East

Villanova got a boost following 2 wins last week and losses by then-ranked #2 Duke, #4 Wisconsin and #6/7 Arizona and moved from 8th in both polls in week 9 to being in the 5th in both polls in week 10. The Wildcats remain the highest-ranked Big East team this season and the only one to be ranked in the top 5.

Seton Hall was 19th in both polls last week after making a big move following their 2-0 league start, including a win over Villanova. The Pirates dropped 2 spots to 21st in both polls this week after losing for the first time in league play at Xavier.

St. John’s is off to their second consecutive 0-3 start to Big East play and have now fallen totally out of the top 25 after dropping to 24th in both polls following their first two losses last week. The Red Storm are receiving votes still this week. The AP Poll ranks the Red Storm 32nd and they are 29th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. but they are the only team to fall out of the top 25 in that poll this week.

Last week the Georgetown Hoyas were 40th in the AP Poll and 27th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Week 10 has them no longer receiving votes in the AP Poll and 32nd in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Butler rebounded from that home defeat against Providence by beating Xavier to go 1-1 last week. The Bulldogs were 28th in the AP Poll last week and 35th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. This week they are 37th in the AP and no longer receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Xavier got some votes last week in the AP Poll good for 44th but they are receiving no votes in either poll this week.

The Big East had 3 teams in the top 25 last week but now only have 2 with St. John’s dropping out. No other Big East teams are receiving votes in either poll.

Providence’s Non-Conference Opponents

Kentucky remains at the top of both polls in week 10 with their 15-0 record. The Wildcats did have two scares last week as they had to beat both Ole Miss and Texas A&M in overtime to remain undefeated.

Miami (FL) did not receive any votes again this week but have two massive opportunities in ACC play this week as they will travel to Duke Tuesday night and then Notre Dame Saturday.

Speaking of the Fighting Irish, Notre Dame won at North Carolina on Monday and lost at home to now #2 Virginia on Saturday. As a result Notre Dame is ranked 12th in the AP Poll this week after being 14th last  week and they remain in the 12th spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Rhode Island Rams got some love this week with 1 vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
