How Are The Recruits Playing? Ryan Fazekas

Coming off a championship season Ryan Fazekas returned to Marquette Catholic for his senior season after Brewster Academy coach Jason Smith reached out to try and scoop up the 6’8 wing forward from Michigan City, IN a few games into his junior season.

Marquette Catholic head coach Donovan Garletts is happy he did as the Blazers went on to win the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals in their first ever appearance. Fazekas scored 34 points in the overtime win including 7/11 from beyond the arc which broke a Class A State Finals record of 6 made 3-pointers. The State Championship rings will be given out before Friday’s home opener against Hanover Central.

The Blazers have played 3 games so far this season and are 1-2 with the win being in their most recent contest on December 12th. Fazekas had his best scoring game of the young season as he poured in 32 points at River Forest. That may not have been his best shooting game though as he went 7/8 from beyond the arc in their first game of the season against East Chicago on November 29th.

Coach Garletts told me that Fazekas “is better than ever” so far this season. Garletts has again set up a very difficult schedule for his team as they are playing teams that are two divisions up from them. He calls it the “hardest schedule in the state for our class.” Fazekas should benefit from playing against the tough competition. “We are very excited to have an Indiana All-Star and Mr. Basketball candidate on this roster,” said Garletts. “Ryan is excellent on and off the court and he is eager to get in the rhythm of the season.”

For the season Fazekas is averaging 26 points/game and 4 rebounds/game. As I said in my Drew Edwards update article you can never have enough shooters. Fazekas can obviously shoot the ball and his size should help him get his shot off on the wing while his improving ability to put the ball on the floor can create a matchup problem for a power forward. Fazekas is another versatile player that will fit very well in Ed Cooley’s offense.
