2014-15 Big East Basketball Conference Schedule Released

The Big East finally released the conference schedule for the 2014-15 season on Tuesday. With the round robin scheduling of the 10 Big East teams the mystery wasn’t who would play each other twice as was the case with the prior version of the Big East but more about timing of road trips and fans being able to lock in on dates on their calendars.

I have updated the 2014-15 Schedule page which is always in the top menu. This has the full schedule with non-conference and now conference matchups. Also included is the television network that the game will be played on (where known at this point).

The popular Big East New Years Eve conference season kickoff is back for the second consecutive year on Fox Sports 1. The Friars will be game 4 of the day and will tip off at 7:30pm vs. Creighton at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center which will be a cool rematch of the Big East Tournament Championship game. The full NYE schedule is (all games will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1):

  • 12:00pm St. John’s at Seton Hall
  • 2:30pm Butler at Villanova
  • 5:00pm Marquette at DePaul
  • 7:30pm Creighton at Providence
  • 10:00pm Georgetown at Xavier

“Our second season in the reconfigured BIG EAST Conference will again feature outstanding competition, wall-to-wall national television coverage, and another rousing finish with our conference tournament at Madison Square Garden, the mecca of college basketball,” said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman. “Our exposure on FOX Sports continues to grow this year, with additional games to be shown on the FOX broadcast network and supplemental programming planned on our recently announced BIG EAST Digital Network on FOX Sports GO. With an exciting group of newcomers joining the conference and the continuation of our double round-robin format, BIG EAST fans will have much to look forward to and, thanks to FOX, many ways to follow all the action.”

Here are my takes on the most interesting road trips and stretches of conference games for the Friars in the 2014-15 Big East season:

  • at St. John’s 1/31/15 12:00pm – this game is cool for a couple of reasons. The first is that the Friars will actually be playing St. John’s at Madison Square Garden this year after being relegated to Carnesseca Arena the last few trips. The second is that this game is on regular Fox. It’s not on Fox Sports 1 or Fox Sports 2. It’s on Fox. That’s pretty cool.
  • The toughest road stretch looks like it will be starting with that St. John’s game at MSG on 1/31/15. The Friars then travel to DC to take on Georgetown at the Verizon Center on 2/4/15 and follow that up by heading to Cincinnati to take on Xavier at the Cintas Center on 2/7/15. My assumption is the Friars will return home after the St. John’s game but I wouldn’t be surprised if they traveled from DC to Ohio since the two games are Wednesday and Saturday.
  • Villanova is thought to be the favorite in the Big East this year but the Friars play both games against the Wildcats somewhat late in the schedule with game 1 at the Dunk on 2/11/15 and game 2 in Philly on 2/24/15. Playing Nova twice in a 2 week span should be an interesting test for the Friars.

Overall I don’t think this schedule is overly tough as the tougher games are a bit spread out and they aren’t getting killed with travel. The one thing I will question is the two weeknight 9pm starts the Friars have while on the East coast. There are also more 12:00pm starts than I can recall in the past. One final note for those PC alums looking ahead at their calendars: my guess is the 2/14/15 game vs. Seton Hall at the Dunk at 4pm will be Alumni & Family Weekend. I have no inside info on that but it’s the weekend that seems to make sense and they have done it on Valentine’s weekend before. That is the only home game on a weekend in the month of February as well.
