Providence Makes School-Record Fourth Straight NCAA Tournament

Providence losing to Creighton in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night broke a streak of three straight trips to the semifinals. One streak that will continue is their NCAA Tournament appearance streak. Providence will be an 11 seed in the East region in a rematch of last year’s First Round game with USC. The Friars and Trojans will face off in Dayton as part of the First Four. The game tips at 9:10pM ET on Wednesday.

This marks the first time in school history that the Friars will be in four straight NCAA Tournaments. Ed Cooley led Providence to their first win in the Big Dance since 1997 when Drew Edwards found Rodney Bullock for a game-winning layup off an inbounds play last March. Providence ran into #1 seed North Carolina in the Second Round and were eliminated by the Tarheels for the second time in three years after a Bryce Cotton-led Providence team lost to Roy Williams’ team in 2014. Should Providence advance in their First Four game against USC they would play #6 seed SMU in Tulsa, OK.

There will be plenty more analysis and discussion about Wednesday’s matchup and whether the Friars were under seeded. For now, enjoy the moment, Friar fans. This is history.
