2017 Hasahn French Includes Providence on Cut-Down List of 13 Schools

2017 forward Hasahn French announced a cut-down list of 13 schools on Friday via his Twitter account and Providence was among the baker’s dozen that will be vying for the versatile big man’s services next season. French is a native of Middletown, NY but attends Commonwealth Academy in Springfield, MA. The lefty ran with the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL grassroots circuit where he averaged 6.8 points/game, 7.5 rebounds/game and 1.4 blocks/game. The other 12 schools on French’s list are Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Marquette, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Saint Louis, Seton Hall, Temple, St. John’s, UNLV, USC and VCU.

ESPN calls French “a throwback style power forward with a strong body and physical style…[who] plays very hard, especially in the paint, where he can elevate through contact to rebound and finish plays.” While he’s a bit undersized for the power forward position at 6’6-6’7, French has shown that he can be productive, both in the NEPSAC AA and on the Nike EYBL circuit. He has continued to develop his mid-range game and plays with a toughness and grit that would translate well to the Big East. Ed Cooley has done pretty well over the years with slightly undersized but productive big men.

The focus for Providence’s recruiting class of 2017 has been to add more size to the front-line. Cooley lost Paschal Chukwu last offseason when the Nigerian 7-footer opted to transfer to Syracuse where he will be eligible this season. This year the loss is Ben Bentil who chose to remain in the NBA Draft and was taken 51st overall by the Boston Celtics. Bentil recently signed a 3-year deal with the Celtics that reportedly includes $250,000 in guaranteed money in year 1. Cooley already locked up some size in this class when Dajour Dickens pledged to Providence back in late February, but the Friar frontman is clearly still on the hunt for more bigs. Other names for Friar fans to keep an eye on are Nate Watson — arguably the top priority recruit in 2017 — Garrison Brooks and Victor Enoh.
