Providence Gets Commitment from 2016 Canadian Big Man Kalif Young

Providence got more good news on the Spring recruiting front when 2016 Canadian big man Kalif Young pledged to Providence on Wednesday afternoon. Young announced the commitment on his Twitter page:

Young joins 2016 Brewster Academy guard Alpha Diallo and junior college forward Emmitt Holt as Spring additions for Ed Cooley. Virginia point guard Maliek White committed and signed in the Fall to make up a 4-man recruiting class for Providence that also will have George Mason transfer Isaiah Jackson eligible this season after sitting out the 2015-16 season, per NCAA transfer rules. Providence still has one open scholarship for the 2016-17 season but they are currently all booked for 2017-18 with the commitment of 2017 Dajour Dickens.

Young fills an immediate need for Providence in their frontcourt after freshman Quadree Smith transferred and with Ben Bentil’s status for the NBA Draft still up in the air. Bentil has until May 25th to make a decision but signs continue to point to the sophomore keeping his name in the draft.

Here’s what I wrote about Young back on May 4th when it was announced that he would visit Providence:

Don’t let his 247Sports Composite National Ranking fool you, Young can play. A quick note on rankings: many services will not include international players in their rankings and because Young is playing in Canada, he wasn’t included in many of the top services like ESPN. Young ran with CIA Bounce for 5 games last spring on the Nike EYBL grassroots circuit, averaging 6.8 points/game and 7.2 rebounds/game. Young played in the Biosteel All-Canadian Games — Canada’s version of the McDonald’s All-American game — featuring the top 24 high school basketball players from across Canada the last two years. This year he took home MVP honors for Team Red after scoring 20 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. He was also measured prior to the game and came in at 6’9 with shoes on and a 7’0 wingspan. The left-hander weighed in at 255 pounds.

Young visited Marquette last week and Providence last weekend and reportedly chose between those two schools. Jeff Battle was the lead assistant in Young’s recruitment.

Providence University? I’m sure he’ll get the name right by graduation.

Actually, it’s an honest mistake and not too far from the truth. I’m a PC alumnus (Class of 81) and I go to Providence once a year to see my beloved Friars play at the Dunk. I also take some time to revisit the campus that I was a part of for four years, and each year I visit I see more and more positive changes not only for the athletic program’s infrastructure, but also from the academic side as well, with new academic buildings being built and other major projects that have come to fruition. With all the construction that is currently going on and all that has been completed, PC looks more like a university than the small 12 building campus did when I was there. So I can understand KY’s honest mistake.

    For Mike Hopkins:
Please inform Coach Cooley that Charles Mathews is leaving UK due to lack of playing time. He seems to be an excellent player. I live in KY. It was just announced in the news. Coach Calipari spoke highly of him. He could be a good addition. Def worth investigating.
