Bracketology Updated by ESPN and CBS Sports 1/18/16

ESPN and CBS Sports have released updated brackets on Monday morning and we’ll continue to track the minutae of each bracketology update so you don’t have to.

Joe Lunardi’s ESPN bracket and Jerry Palm’s CBS Sports bracket have very different reactions to Providence’s 1-1 week last week that saw the Friars win at Creighton and lose at home to Seton Hall. Palm has consistently been higher on the Friars than Lunardi since the preseason brackets came out in November.

Providence

Providence 1-1 week leaves fans with a bad taste in their mouth after the week concluded with a loss at home to Seton Hall after winning an ugly game at the buzzer in Omaha. Lunardi has slid Providence down multiple seed lines to the 6 line. Palm, on the other hand, kept the Friars on the 3 line, which is where he had them entering the weekend.

The Rest of the Big East

Xavier gets a 1 seed again in Palm’s bracket, while Lunardi has the Musketeers as a 2 seed. Villanova gets the nod by Lunardi to the 1 line and he joins Palm as having the Wildcats as a 1 seed. Butler moved up a line in Palm’s bracket from 7 to 6, while Lunardi kept the Bulldogs on the 7 line in his bracket. Both Palm and Lunardi now have Seton Hall in their field to make 5 Big East teams in the 68. Palm has been including the Pirates as a 10 seed and that continues. Lunardi has them in as a 12 seed and one of the “Last Four In” teams that have to play against another 12 seed to get into the actual First Round.

Providence’s Non-Con Opponents

Michigan State slips down to a 3 seed in Lunardi’s bracket, while Palm has them as a 2 seed. The Spartans have struggled a bit in Big Ten play. Arizona moved up to a 3 seed in Lunardi’s bracket, while Palm has the Wildcats sticking on the 4 line.
