First 2016 Bracketology Updates Made by ESPN and CBS Sports

Both ESPN and CBS Sports came out with their inaugural 2016 Bracketology updates on Monday. Joe Lunardi and Jerry Palm are in agreement on the Friars in opponent and location of the First Round game. Each man’s bracket has the Friars facing off against High Point University in Brooklyn in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. They do differ on the particular seed, however.

Providence

Providence is off to a great start in Big East play with a road win against 9th ranked Butler and a fairly easy home win against lowly St. John’s. The Friars are now 14-1 on the season and figure to jump back into the top 10 in the polls when they are released later today. Lunardi has Providence on the 3 line, up from a 5 the last time he released a bracket on December 8th. Palm continues to keep Providence on the 2 line after moving the Friars up to that seed line in his latest release on December 30th.

The Rest of the Big East

Lunardi and Palm both have the same 5 Big East teams in the field of 68. Xavier is a 2 seed in both of their brackets, though that’s a slip in Palm’s December 30th bracket where he had the Musketeers as the lone Big East 1 seed. Villanova jumped up 3 spots in Palm’s bracket from a 5 to a 2 and the Wildcats are a 3 seed in Lunardi’s bracket. Butler’s 0-2 start to Big East play has them sliding on the seed line in both brackets. Lunardi has the Bulldogs as a 6 seed and Palm has then dropping from a 2 to a 5. Palm has Seton Hall solidly in his field as a 10 seed. Lunardi has the Pirates in a bit more of a precarious spot as an 11 seed playing a “First Four” game against 11 seed Monmouth. Seton Hall is part of Lunardi’s “Last Four In” category.

Providence’s Non-Con Opponents

Michigan State remains on the 1 line in both brackets after rebounding from their first loss of the season by winning on the road at Minnesota. Arizona has slid up from a 4 to a 3 in Palm’s bracket and Lunardi agrees with that seed line for the Wildcats.
