Providence Among Headliners for 2016 Emerald Coast Classic Field

Providence is playing in the Emerald Coast Classic in 2016. That news broke back in July. The news out Tuesday is the who Providence may face while in the tournament next season. The headlining acts for the tournament that is run by Global Sports are Iowa, Memphis, Providence and Virginia. The other teams announced in the 2016 field are the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Savannah State and St. Francis (Brooklyn). There is one more team that has yet to be finalized.

The tournament’s format is for the first and second round games to be held at campus sites between November 12th and November 23rd and then have the third and fourth round games be held Thanksgiving weekend (November 25th-26th) down in Niceville, FL on the campus of Northwest Florida State College — the Raiders are coached by former Providence assistant Steve DeMeo. “We have assembled another great field in the third year of this event, reinforcing our goal of making this one of the top preseason college basketball events annually,” said tournament director Maury Hanks. Hanks is also the CEO of Global Sports.

The 2015 tournament field consisted of headliners Illinois, Iowa State, UAB and Virginia Tech, as well as Alabama State, Chattanooga, Chicago State and Jacksonville State. Iowa State defeated Illinois in the championship game. CBS Sports Network is the television partner for the Emerald Coast Classic.
