2017 Javon Taylor No Longer Committed to Providence

2017 guard Javon Taylor is now officially uncommitted, according to his father Maurice Taylor. The elder Taylor tweeted the news on Thursday. The commitment of Taylor after Providence’s 2014 Elite Camp came as a shock to many people because of how early the pledge was made. For comparison the Friars also got a commitment around that time from another player in Alex Owens. Owens was in the class of 2015. Taylor’s family does have a relationship with Cooley as the Friar head coach recruited Javon’s older brother Jacquil.

Taylor is a player that has immense potential and showed flashes of that potential at this year’s Providence Elite Camp. At this point he is probably not a Big East level guard but there’s still time to change that. There is also the chance that he continues to grow and could eventually become a wing player with a few more inches added to his frame. Taylor is currently ranked 20th in New England by New England Recruiting Report.

Providence currently has 3 open scholarships in the class of 2017 and the staff is involved with a number of highly ranked and talented prospects, including a plethora of New England prep school players. Cooley and his staff are currently focused on the class of 2016 at the moment and are hoping to reel in big man Sedee Keita. This move appears to be a win for both parties. Taylor can now get back onto the recruiting radar and big boards of schools that are at a more appropriate level for the current state of his game. It also allows Providence to keep recruiting highly ranked players in 2017.
