Providence Recruiting Update: Friars Out for Jackson, Will Visit Marfo

August in recruiting means players are cutting and narrowing their lists and schools are trying to  make their pitches to get those players onto their campuses for official visits. The Friars have been in that rhythm over these last few weeks, both making and missing list cuts. The next step is to get players that included Providence on their lists to campus. So far there are two recruits that have scheduled visits to Friartown — a guard in Shamorie Ponds and a power forward in JJ Matthews. Ponds is also visiting St. John’s and Minnesota after already visiting Creighton. Matthews is visiting Towson and Murray State before his trip to Providence in early October.

Providence Out for Jackson

Another player that included Providence on his cut-down list is now no longer considering the Friars. Quentin Jackson has cut Providence out of his list that originally included Charlotte, Cincinnati and Lehigh in addition to Providence. That news was first reported on ScoutFriars.com by Jeff Ferrucci and on Twitter by Chad Brendel. A separate source also confirmed the news to pcbb1917.com on Wednesday morning. That same source also told pcbb1917.com that Jackson including Lehigh on his cut-down list was “out of left field.” Jackson will now likely decide between Charlotte — a school within a few hours of his home — and Cincinnati.

Marfo to Get Visit at School

In more positive Providence recruiting news the Friars are in solid shape with BABC and Worcester Academy big man Kevin Marfo. Marfo cut his list down to 10 on August 16th and is planning to host all 10 schools at Worcester Academy to hear presentations before deciding which 5 schools will get official visits. Providence will be the first school to present their case to Marfo at Worcester Academy on September 9th — the first day that coaches can have in-person contact with recruits off-campus. The other schools on Marfo’s list are Boston College, DePaul, George Washington, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, St. Joseph, UMass and URI. Assistant coach Brian Blaney has been the lead on Marfo with Cooley also getting involved with the New Jersey native’s recruitment.
