Report: Sean Miller To Take Reigns of U19 USA National Team, Ed Cooley to Stay on Staff

One domino that may not have been immediately considered by some was that Billy Donovan taking the head coaching job with the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA meant that Donovan could no longer coach the U19 USA National team this summer. Ed Cooley and Sean Miller were named as Donovan’s assistants in January 2015. They both served on Donovan’s staff for the U18 USA National team last summer.

Adam Zagoria reported on Twitter Wednesday that Sean Miller would take over as head coach with Donovan stepping aside. Zagoria’s report from an anonymous source also indicates that Cooley will stay on Miller’s staff as an assistant. No choice for the other assistant position has been reported. There has also been no official announcement from USA Basketball on Donovan or Miller’s status as it pertains to the U19 team.

The 2015 U19 World Championships will be held in Crete, Greece from June 27-July 5th. Training camp will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO from June 12-26. This 2015 U19 squad will be looking to defend the gold medal won by the 2013 U19 team in Prague at the last U19 World Championships which are now held every other year. That 2013 team included current college stars Jahlil Okafor, Justice Winslow, Nigel Williams-Goss and Montrezl Harrell and current NBA players like Marcus Smart, Elfrid Payton and Aaron Gordon.
