Providence Involved with Washington Transfer Nigel Williams-Goss

On April 9th Nigel Williams-Goss announced that he would transfer from the University  of Washington after two seasons. Williams-Goss was a team captain and led the Huskies in scoring, assists and minutes played this past season. There is a USA Basketball connection with Ed Cooley as Williams-Goss played on the U19 USA Basketball team for which Cooley was a training camp court coach in June 2013. The 6’3 lead guard averaged 15.6 points/game, 5.9 assists/game, 4.7 rebounds/game and 1.1 steals/game in 36.8 minutes/game a season ago for Lorenzo Romar and the Huskies.

In an interview with Percy Allen of the Seattle Times from April 10th Williams-Goss indicated that despite being the captain and putting up team-leading numbers he didn’t like all of the changes that had been going on within the program and that he is looking for “stability…and really just kind of looking for a fresh start for my last two years of eligibility.” In terms of what he is looking for at a new school Williams-Goss told Allen “I’m really looking for… a situation…where I know it’s high intensity…and a culture that’s built on preparing to win and competing to win.”

He has received his release and is setting up visits. Jon Rothstein reported Tuesday that Williams-Goss has set up campus visits to UNLV this weekend, Providence beginning on April 25th, Texas beginning on May 1st, Georgetown beginning on May 8th and Michigan State is trying to schedule a date for a visit. Minutes later Jeff Goodman reported that Williams-Goss has also set up some in-home visits. According to Goodman’s tweet, the visits will be with Georgetown later this week, Shaka Smart of Texas on Monday and Cooley on Tuesday. Williams-Goss is a native of Happy Valley, OR.

Williams-Goss had an assist rate of 35.9% last season, according to Kenpom.com. That mark was good enough for 23rd best nationally. In comparison, Kris Dunn led the nation at 50.0%, which was way ahead of the nearest assist man at 45.95. Williams-Goss had an eFG% of 46.8%, according to Hoop-Math.com. He only shot 25.6% from beyond the arc but made 61.2% of his shots at the rim.

Williams-Goss was a McDonald’s All-American in 2013 coming out of Findlay Prep in Nevada. He committed to UNLV in December 2010 before decommitting in April 2011 and signing with Washington in late May 2012. ESPN ranked him 19th overall in the class of 2013 and as the 4th best point guard nationally in the class. Williams-Goss will have to sit out the 2015-16 season, per NCAA transfer rules and will have 2 years of eligibility remaining.
