Providence Adds Postgrad Guard Ricky Council to 2015 Class

Providence has been looking to add another guard in the 2015 class for awhile now and there have been some names that popped up over the last few months. A name that Friar fans will remember from the summer of 2014 is Ricky Council. Council was a member of the class of 2014 when Providence first began expressing interest in the 6’4 guard from North Carolina. Following a summer on the grassroots circuit with his non-shoe company affiliated team Brand X, Council opted for a postgraduate year at Moravian Prep and became part of the class of 2015.

Providence was the first high major offer for Council back on January 12th after associate head coach Bob Simon took in a practice at Moravian Prep. The rumor surrounding Council was always that he wanted to play in the ACC and my fear was he would allow his recruitment to carry on deep into the spring as he awaited an offer from someone in that conference. Apparently his visit to Providence the weekend of February 13th-15th was enough to convince both Council and his parents that Providence was the place for him despite the distance from home. Council joins Drew Edwards, Ryan Fazekas and Alex Owens in Providence’s 2015 recruiting class.

Council reportedly gave his commitment to Ed Cooley on Monday, per Richard Coren of ScoutFriars.com. Evan Daniels of Scout.com was the first to publicly report the commitment on Tuesday. Bob Simon was the lead recruiter on Council. Barring any transfers or players leaving early this closes the class of 2015 for the Friars as they are now at the maximum 13 scholarships for the 2015-16 season.

According to his coach at Moravian Prep Council had over 20 Division 1 offers, including Clemson, Creighton, Georgia Tech, Marquette, NC State and Tulsa. Coach Ellis also told Evan Daniels that Council is shooting 45% from beyond the arc and is averaging 29 points/game this season. My favorite quote from that article though is the coach saying “[Council is] the best young man I’ve ever coached. My 8 year old wants to go to Providence now because Ricky is going there.”
